The last conductor of Auschwitz’s men’s orchestra, there is little in Laks’s music that memorialises or even references his wartime experience. His music, largely unknown until ARC’s recording, is witty, urbane and beautifully crafted; the Piano Quintet on Polish Themes a nostalgic tribute to his homeland.
